Overview of Mariner East Project
Mariner East 1 (completed)
The Mariner East 1 project involved repurposing an existing pipeline that previously carried products from the former oil refinery located at Marcus Hook in Delaware County, PA to markets in the west. The pipeline was refurbished, as the Mariner East Project, to carry 70,000 barrels daily of natural gas liquids (liquid propane and ethane) from Western Pennsylvania to Marcus Hook for both domestic distribution and export. Mariner East 1 utilizes mostly existing 8-inch diameter steel pipeline, except for a portion of the line, located in western Pennsylvania that was increased to 12-inch diameter steel pipe. The Mariner East 1 project was completed in late 2014 and is shipping both ethane and propane.
Mariner East 2
Sunoco Logistics is proposing to expand the existing Mariner East pipeline system through the construction of the Mariner East 2 (PA Pipeline Project) project. When constructed, this project will transport natural gas liquids from Ohio and the Pittsburgh area to the Marcus Hook facility for both domestic distribution and export. The Mariner East 2 pipeline, proposes approximately 350 miles of pipe, spanning Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Mariner East 2 will have an initial capacity of approximately 275,000 barrels a day of natural gas liquids using a 20" diameter pipeline. The length of the project through Chester County is approximately 23.6 miles and in Delaware County, 11.4 miles. Approximately 80% of the Mariner East 2/PA Pipeline Project is to be located within existing right-of-ways.
On February 13, 2017, the PA DEP issued the necessary Chapter 105 (Water Obstruction and Encroachment) permits for each county the project will cross and the Chapter 102 (Erosion and Sediment Control) permits for each PA DEP region the project will cross. Construction began in late winter/early spring 2017 and the Mariner East 2 pipeline was put into service at the end of 2018. The second 16" pipeline, known as the ME2X, is being added to the Mariner East project easement. As of mid-2019, the Mariner East 2X line was still under construction.
With the commencement of construction, Sunoco has provided DEP with a 24 hotline number for the Pennsylvania Pipeline Project, also known as Mariner East II (ME2). This number is: 855-430-4491. This hotline allows for inquiries and concerns to be directed to Sunoco during construction.
