Chester County Planning Commission Prepares to Launch Open Space Accelerator Mini-Grant Program for Municipalities

May 2026

The Chester County Planning Commission is launching the Open Space Accelerator Mini-Grant Program in June 2026, offering municipalities a new opportunity to move priority open space projects from concept to action. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted, so municipalities are encouraged to apply early. Awards are up to $10,000 and require a 50% cash match, for a total project value of $20,000. Funded in part through a partnership grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Community Conservation Partnerships Program, the program is designed to support projects that strengthen local open space and parks, protect natural resources, and expand greenway connections.

This program offers a practical path for municipalities to move ideas identified in previous plans toward becoming reality by focusing on a one or two high-impact, achievable actions. Project types that are well-suited to the Open Space Accelerator program include land preservation plans, feasibility studies for small trail connections, zoning amendments that promote open space and natural resources protection, feasibility studies for municipal open space funding programs, and many more.

An informational webinar was held on May 12 walking attendees through how the program works, including eligibility, funding and match requirements, example project types, and the application process. Municipal staff and officials are encouraged to attend and explore how this program can help advance local open space goals. A recording of the webinar will be provided on the program's website.
